Best Self Defense

Best Self Defense

I get a lot of questions, usually during seminars, about which is the best self defense system out of all the martial arts and self defense systems out there. People from all walks of life ask this question.

And to be honest, I do not like this question.

There are to many misunderstandings and flawed assumptions behind the question itself. The word “Best” shows ignorance and the influence of media hype. How can there be a best self defense system? It is not a tool or cleaner of some sort that can be analyzed by scientists to definitively answer the question and state yes this particular system is the best self defense system. There are WAY to many variables.

Self Defense is about protecting yourself under an immediate threat and coming up with an appropriate answer to the threat in a very limited time frame. Self Defense denotes that things have already gone wrong and you have to physically protect yourself. It is also about the assessment of many different variables and rapidly changing circumstances.

If you have two people from two different systems fight, one wins, does that mean that the other persons system is not as good as the person who won? No, of course not!

All it means is that the loosing person lost today. Thats it. Maybe he was sick. Maybe he was injured. Maybe he thought a kick was coming when in fact it was an elbow strike to his head that landed. Again, way to many variables.

Best Self Defense

There is no such thing as a perfect self defense system. Never will be. It might be great at some things, maybe even a whole bunch of things, but not so good in other areas.

Asking the question “what is the best self defense training”  or system makes me think that people believe that there is 1 particular “Super System” out there with all the answers. And this super program will automatically teach you EVERYTHING you need to know about personal safety, personal protection, and self defense.

It will even teach you about things like threat assessment, use of force, social dynamics, human behavior, the nature of violence critical thinking, understanding of fear, self defense law, medical management, psychology, de-escalation tactics, evasion, escaping techniques, deterrents, types of violence, and so much more.

Not to mention the super system’s physical training.

I really hope you get the idea that there is no such thing as a “Best Self Defense” program out there. Find one that is right for you and can provide enough information so that you never have to find yourself in a situation where you have to find out how good your system really is.
