Self Defense Clothing, Should We Wear Them?

By on January 2, 2013

I got into a random thought this morning, and to tell you the truth, it is something I have thought about many times in the past. The thought was about if it was good to wear clothing that has self defense or martial arts on them. Especially the type of shirts that promote an SD/MA school or tell others that you train in them.

I know most of the world thinks it is cool and all to wear your schools clothing line. I did for many many years. But is it the best thing do to?

Case in point, I had a friend of mine, we’ll call him Josh for now; Josh and I were one day out at a party together many years ago and he had decided to wear our Self Defense schools shirt. Josh wore it proudly. As did I back then. I just wasn’t wearing any on this particular night.

Around 3 or 4 hours into the party, Josh and I are standing talking with some friends when some guy behind us notices Josh’s shirt. On the back of the shirt it says:

Can You Protect Yourself & Your Loved Ones
Real World Self Defense

Well needless to say, this guy took that as a personal ‘challenge’ and wanted to start a fight. This guy comes over and pushes right in between Josh and Bill, the guy he was talking to and says “So, you are one of the Karate guys, huh?”. Josh, being the nice guy he was and from his training did everything he could to calm this guy down and get out of the situation. But no matter what Josh said or did, this guy was just pushing and pushing.

And then the fight started.

It ended just as quick as it started. Josh beat the crap out of this guy. After the fight was over me and some of my other friends interrogated this guy to find out what his problem was. And we found out that it all stemmed from the shirt.

Because it was a shirt that was for a school of combat, told this guy that Josh could fight. And this guy used to be a amateur boxer and thought he could take this “Karate guy” and show the world that martial arts is crap.

Now, think about this. Do you want everyone in the world to know what you do and train in? Do you want to give the “surprise” away? You have a tactical advantage by doing everything possible to not let the other person know that you know anything.

This is why I do not wear any combat clothing anymore. If I do, it is going to be something that has no sign that I know something. Maybe something with just a logo but no wording. Well that is my thoughts on the subject.

What are your thoughts on the topic?
