Teaching Module

This teaching module will attempt to teach you the basics of what you need to know for teaching classes. This will not and can not be the final say on teaching classes. Due to class sizes, dynamics and material, classes can stray a great deal away from what is presented here.

As long as you stick with the curriculum in the order it is supposed to be presented, there should be no problem.

Level 1 Self Defense Curriculum


[tab title="Level 1 Overview"]Level 1 is primarily about the understanding of real violence. How attacks really happen. What are the most common attacks. Good, bad guy concept, acting, and training in how to be a bad guy.

On top of that you will also teach the basics of the emotional, psychological & physical sides of violence with a heavy emphasis on training reality.

NOTE: Primal Survival primarily teaches those 15 years of age or older. And the curriculum is set for adults. You can however adapt the information to teach children between the ages of 7-14 should you choose to.

Class Structure

- 1 to 1.5 hours

Classes are broken down into 3 primary areas of training.

  1. Warm-up, Lecture and Demonstration
  2. Solo Training
  3. Partner Training

Teaching Instructions

First thing first. All classes should revolve around 1 or 2 central ideas or tools. You should not train kicking, punching, takedowns, pad work, grappling and weapons in one class. It should be more like this.

Lets say you want to train just the primal shield. Well then everything you do in class for that class should revolve around

In our classes there is no bowing (like traditional martial arts) toward the instructor at the beginning and end of classes. Respect is shown in other ways. Only during basic (non scenario) parter training is there any physical show of respect done partner to partner.

Classes should always start with a brief workout (sticking with our fitness philosophy). This should be 15 minutes or less. Should be of moderate intensity as well. We do not want our students to be so drained that they can not perform at greater intensity during actual training.

After that, while the students catch their breath, there should be some sort of lecture on one of the training areas. This could be on the Emotional or Psychological areas of training or maybe a response to a question or two.

Then everyone should start the physical side of training with Shadow-Fighting. It should incorporate what was taught from the class prior. This is not necessarily the class from the day before. But from the single students own prior class.

Next should come training in the 3 T’s. This can be solo or with a partner. On a bag or pad or whatever. This could also involve practicing the Combat form solo, solo dynamic, with a partner, or partner dynamic.

Next should come some Bag & Pad Training. This is to help build our attributes like speed, power, agility, combinations, improving hand-eye co-ordination, etc.

Next would be some dynamic Partner Training. This could include scenarios or replication drills, or just working one on one with trying to develop certain tools, tactics and targets. The point though is that it is more dynamic and has more energy behind this than just regular learning.

The class should then end with visualization, discussion of what was learned & answering questions.

Now I know that this might seem like a lot of stuff to do in a single class. And that is kind of the point. You are essentially only practicing one or 2 things per class. But you are training several different ways making that class really engaging, fun and awesome. People really and truly enjoy classes if done properly.

I also have a personal philosophy of no “legitimate” question left unanswered. If someone asks a question, I go out of my way to answer it for them. I personally thrive off of questions. BUT, I will not answer some. Like if a new student asks me to show them or teach them an advanced drill or concept. I will refuse solely on the basis that they are not ready for the information.

And if you don’t know the answer, SAY you don’t know the answer. DO NOT make something up just to please them. tell them you will get back with an correct answer and then get a hold of me and ask me. I will help you figure it out. Any instructor making stuff up and not sticking to the stricktest moral and ethical code will not be an instructor very long.
