Threats That Most Preppers Haven’t Prepared For

By on January 5, 2013

When planning for a TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) scenario, survival will be a much bigger challenge than you ever thought possible. While you can definitely take certain measures to prepare yourself for what’s to come, when you’re talking about a true TEOTWAWKI scenario, all bets are off.

Now I know most preppers know to stock up on food, water, medical supplies, Bug Out Bags, weapons, etc. Some even go to the extreme of building elaborate underground shelters (Which is actually something I want to do). But I find there are certain things missing in the preparation lists.

#1 Missed Prep

LEO’s (Law Enforcement Officers) and the Military Will Try to Take Your Guns.

Well we all know now that this is slowly coming to light. With the government and Obama like it is, they are doing everything in their power to disarm Law-Abiding citizens of their weapons. I personally think this is BS.

There are some people, including some preppers, that don’t think this will ever happen.

Think it can’t happen? It already has!

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Police Superintendent Eddie Compass ordered all local law enforcement, including the U.S. Marshalls office and the National Guard, to seize all civilian firearms even without warrants. Then had the audacity to tell the people, “you don’t need these, you have us”. They would even say “you trying to make trouble? only criminals have guns, so you must be a criminal.”

The National Guard troops and New Orleans law enforcement officials forcibly confiscated over 1,000 legal firearms from law abiding citizens. It is extremely likely that they will come for your guns during a large scale national disaster! Hide your weapons!!!

#2 Missed Prep

No Self Defense Knowledge

Many preppers and even advanced preppers seem to miss this step. They have the thinking that if they buy a crap load of weapons and ammo and even train to shoot them that it gives them all the self defense knowledge they need. Well it doesn’t.

You NEED to know how to defend yourself under all conditions, with and without weapons. In a real TEOTWAWKI event, there will be some real lunatics out there that want what you have. Guaranteed!

You need to know about awareness, how to avoid and escape bad situations, how to de-escalate a situation, how to ‘read’ people, how attacks actually happen (not the bullshit martial arts crap), etc.

#3 Missed Prep

Spotting Fake Military and Law Enforcement

You need to be on the lookout for everything in a TEOTWAWKI event. This includes spotting criminals that are impersonating law enforcement and military personnel to prey on the innocent. You have to be able to quickly determine who is who, or completely stay away from people totally.

#4 Missed Prep

Garbage, Garbage, Everywhere!

Honestly, how many of you have prepared for there not being any garbage service out there? I asked about this on a forum about 3 months back, and out of 47 people that replied, only 3 had even thought about it. I guarantee that when the SHTF, garbage will be a big big problem.

Even now during times when things are “ok”, garbage is still a problem for some. Like right now around where I live, there has not been trash pickup for 2 weeks (due to holidays and I think a strike). And some people are going crazy not knowing what to do with it all.

#5 Missed Prep

Preparing for Mental and Physical Challenges.

Not everything is going to go the way you plan it just because you have prepared for it. You might have to deal with a lack of sleep, or maybe massive dehydration. Or maybe something as simple as a tree limb falls and lands on top of your spouses legs. Can you move it? Are you in good enough shape? Do you have the tools to move it properly? Are you prepared mentally for something like that happening to someone you love? Or yourself?

Lots of people like to mention the gun confiscation in New Orleans after Katrina. What they almost never mention is that the NRA and Second Amendment Foundation sued the city and effectively won when the city settled the case to agreeable terms for the parties involved. In other words, what happened in NOLA was wrong and they know it was wrong. I'm not saying others wont try, but the action has been rebuked.

I would love to share your post but your use of the "F" word keeps me from sharing it with my church friends... Great ideas though...

You are VERY right!! Time to start re-evaluating our preps. I have to look it up to find it again but Ive read multiple articles about food stocks being confiscated because it was deemed hoarding. There also has been talk of prepers being labeled terrorists and taken into custody with their stocks confiscated. Scary times... I wanted to be a person who openly helped others prep but with these things happening, it makes me want to just be a secretive prepper. Stay safe!

The good news about Katrina is that the regular military refused an order to disarm civilians. The cops and National Guard were another story. I believe what we have to plan on doing is, if you have to move, do so in large armed groups. The 'thugs' seemed to work best by out numbering the citizens they approached to take their guns. The group should move with a small point team out in front to meet with any thug cops. The main group should be some distance behind, and there should be several people armed with high-powered rifles among them. When stopped, the sharp shooters should spread out, making it obvious that they are covering the point team. If the cops are smart, they'll realize that should they start anything, the sharp shooters could easily take them out. If you might be looking at having to bug-out, it would be wise to start networking now and build such a group. Practice and refine the tactic before you have to use it. Faced with this, I would think the cops would move on to look for easier prey.

That actually happened to a friend of a friend, Richard. Rich had called the police to report a burglary in the house next door (The residence were on vacation). And when the police officer was in his house making a statement, the officer noticed that Rich had loads of food stock. This made the officer 'un easy' as my friend put it. Within 24 hours Rich had police all over his house taking his food, weapons and other preps, just because. They told him that he was 'under surveillance' from that point on. Why do they think they can pull this crap and get away with it? It really pisses me off.
